Parent-Toddler January 7-15, 2019

Dear Families,

Please welcome Sawyer to our class, along with her parents, Trisha and Steve. These past two weeks have been spent getting back into our school routine, exploring new materials, practicing fine motor skills, and sensory work.

We’ve noticed that the tongs are particularly difficult for the toddlers to use at snack time, and so we planned a sensory activity to help develop this skill. We filled the sensory table with cooked spaghetti and pom pom “meatballs.” The children practiced using the tongs to get the spaghetti and meatballs into bowls. This was a fun and exciting way for them to receive sensory input and develop the fine motor skills needed to use the tongs.

The following week, the sensory table was  filled with tubs of water and giant sponges. The children practiced soaking the sponges with water and transferring the water from one tub to the next. This activity develops fine motor skills, hand strength, and knowledge about water and its properties.

We’ve noticed that the trains and train tracks are very popular with the toddlers, and so we had the opportunity to add more track, trains, and switches. The children have enjoyed building more elaborate runs.

We swapped out our hair salon for a Pet Care/Vet Clinic area. The toddlers have enjoyed taking care of the stuffed pets, including brushing them, playing with them, feed/watering, and taking them to the vet. We have provided various veterinarian instruments for them to explore, such as stethoscopes, otoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, bandages, and  mouth mirrors. The children have enjoyed dressing up in lab coats and becoming doctors/vets.

We visited the multi-purpose room for the first time. We set up the room for gross motor play. The children enjoyed jumping on the trampoline, walking on the balace beam, rocking in the rockers, and swinging in the sensory swing. We will plan another “outing” to this room as it was greatly enjoyed.

Sincerely,

Rebecca and Kim
