Fine Motor Skills!

One of the big skills that we work on with younger children is fine motor. You can see many opportunities in our class for children to practice these skills. Using tongs, grasping markers and crayons, building their hand muscles by squishing play-dough, using small manipulatives and the hardest thing of all..scissors! We did a little concentrated work with scissors today.

There are many separate skills with scissors and each child worked on different aspects of this skill.

You can see June figuring out the grip.

William knows the grip and is working on control.

Wren is using a type of scissor that is spring loaded so kids can start with one part of the opening-closing movement that is involved in scissor use.

Toddlers and younger preschoolers usually just “snip”  by making one cut on a paper then moving to another part and making another cut. Older preschoolers progress to continually opening and closing their hands to make a longer cut.
